Also called decongestion therapy, it was used to treat lymphedema, an unnatural swelling in the legs and arms caused by blocked or damaged blood vessels. Lymphatic decongestion therapy stimulates lymphatic flow by "unplugging" blockages in lymphatic vessels. The lymphatic system is a critical part of your immune system. It's a transportation system to remove toxins, old proteins, cancer cells, viruses, and dead cells from the body.

Lymphatic Therapy incorporates many techniques to address lymphatic dysfunction. Complete decongestive therapy (CDT), also called complex decongestive therapy, is an intensive program that combines many of the different treatment approaches discussed in this section, including bandaging, compression garments, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise, and self care. Manual lymphatic drainage is the application of light, flowing strokes of massage in specific patterns with the goal of alleviating lymph edema after lymph node resection or radiation therapy.
